Protecting Clients’ Digital Legacies in a Digital Age
In today’s digital world, clients leave behind more than just physical assets; they create digital legacies that can have lasting effects on their families and loved ones. From social media accounts to digital financial records, safeguarding these assets is crucial for proper estate planning. Here’s how you can help your clients protect their digital legacies.
Organize Digital Assets: Encourage clients to create a comprehensive inventory of their digital assets. This includes social media accounts, online banking, cryptocurrencies, email accounts, and any other digital files or subscriptions. An organized list makes it easier for loved ones to manage these assets after a client’s passing.
Appoint a Digital Executor: Just as clients designate an executor for their physical estate, they should appoint someone to manage their digital assets. A digital executor ensures that online accounts are properly handled, either by closing them, transferring ownership, or managing their content as per the client’s wishes.
Update Passwords and Security Settings: Clients should use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication to protect their digital accounts. It's also important for them to share password access securely with their digital executor to ensure these accounts can be accessed when needed.
Create Digital Will or Trust: Include digital assets in the client's will or trust, outlining how they should be handled. Some online services, like Facebook or Google, allow users to designate a legacy contact who can manage their accounts after death.
By addressing digital legacies as part of estate planning, clients can ensure that their digital assets are protected and their wishes are honored, leaving a legacy that’s secure for future generations.
